Home to over half of Alaska's population, Southcentral is a playground of activities from world-class fishing to hiking and wildlife viewing. With mountains and lakes, Southcentral offers the advantages of remote wilderness, but is linked via roads. World-class rainbow trout and salmon shimmer brilliantly, beckoning to prospective anglers. Southcentral has the amenities travelers seek, while serving as a gateway to the wilderness experience.
Southcentral Alaska is home to some of the largest wilderness regions in the world. The Chugach, Wrangell, and Saint Elias ranges converge in the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park and Preserve, often referred to as the "mountain kingdom of North America." The largest unit of the National Park System, this spectacular wilderness includes the continent's largest assemblage of glaciers, and greatest collection of peaks above 16,000 feet, including 18,008' Mount St. Elias, the second highest peak in the United States.
Prince William Sound encompasses 10,000 square miles of protected waterways, islands, fjords, as well as 100,000 glaciers. The region offers habitat for whales, porpoise, sea otters, sea lions and seals. Bear, deer, goats, and sheep inhabit the mainland. Experience Prince William Sound by day cruise or more elaborately via skytrekking, the ultimate way to explore the vast wilderness.
The towns in Southcentral are also quite dynamic, with Anchorage, Alaska's largest city and home to such cultural establishments as the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Anchorage Museum of History and Art being the jumping off point for many journeys into the rest of Alaska. The Kenai Peninsula is home to Seward and Whittier - embarkation and disembarkation points for many cruises and the Peninsula also reels in some of the world's largest salmon and halibut. Talkeetna, north of Anchorage, is the gateway to Mt. McKinley.
The towns are filled with character, the wilderness filled with awe, and the natural beauty to amaze the most discerning soul.
